INNSBRUCK, Austria -- The body of an American snowboarder who disappeared in an avalanche in January was found on Sunday, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Mountain rescuers using dogs found the body buried under about one yard of snow.

The 31-year-old snowboarder, who was not identified, had been missing since an avalanche swept away several tourists who were skiing near the resort of St. Anton in western Austria. Three Canadians also died in the slide.

Austrian authorities do not generally release details of those who die in such accidents.

Austria recorded 48 avalanche deaths this past winter, officials said Wednesday, a sixfold increase in fatalities over the previous year, which was an unusual low.
